Summary |
The approach of the Network to improve communication within the UK Multimedia Knowledge Management area is primarily through
meetings, workshops and visits
communication via e-mail lists and web presence generation of joint resources on the web horizontal special interest groups
Support will be given to young researchers to increase contact across the interdisciplinary field, by assisting funding of travel to conferences, meetings, or visits to other labs. Special interest groups addressing sub-themes, for example efficient multi-dimensional indexing or mufti-media summarisation, will be encouraged. Some groups working in the multimedia knowledge management area may only have one researcher working on such a particular sub-theme. By having "horizontal" interaction between groups there is the potential of mutual benefit to all. The special interest groups will be encouraged to share resources, create resources and make them available for the Network and are expected to identify collaborative funding opportunities

| Final Report Summary |
The Multimedia Knowledge Management e-mail list (MMKM@jiscmail.ac.uk) now consists of 461 subscribers (May 2008), and we have set up and maintained a related web site on www.mmkm.org, which also has a section for resources such as data sets and projects. MMKM held and organised 5 dedicated workshops and had breakout workshops at 4 further conferences with around 50 participants per event. We created a living document (currently 94 pages) that circulates in the MMKM community and records current developments and future trends. Over 70 individuals received funding from the network for attendance of conferences, lab visits and summer schools. The network was actively promoted through flyers and announcements at summer schools, conferences, and through e-mail in related e-mail lists, which led to a community of now 461 subscribed members of the MMKM e-mail list. The network continues to receive funding from the CEC-sponsored Network of Excellence PetaMedia with 180,000 Euro over 3.5 years starting from 1 March 2008. The awarded EPSRC funds for 2004-2008 were spent in
line with the original grant proposal (mainly to organise workshops and to support young researchers to attend conferences and summer schools). The original aims and objectives of the network grant were all fulfilled.
