Summary
The proposed research will advance understanding of organotransition metal complexes with quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) activity, improving the potential of such compounds for practical applications in optoelectronic and photonic devices. Such studies are timely because metal complexes continue to be largely overlooked as useful NLO materials, despite holding great promise. This project will involve the syntheses and characterisation of Ru(II) ammine and Fe(II) cyanide complexes of a series pyridyl polyene and polyyne ligands bearing pyrkliniran electron acceptor groups. Characterisation will involve exensive use of electronic absorption and electrochemical measurements. The molecular first hyperpolarizabilities of these novel complexes will be measured by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements, and Stark spectroscopy will be used to determine dipole moment changes on excitation which can be used to calculate first hyperpolarizabilities and various other molecular electronic properties.
