Summary
In order to provide effective support for determining the cost effectiveness of new aerospace products and manufacturing processes significant improvements need to occur in the cost model development process. In order to achieve these improvements the proposed work will initially identify and document the current cost modelling practices and tools primarily used within the aerospace industry. A comprehensive range of cost modelling exercises, both in-company and along the supply chain, will then be performed, (using these current practices and tools), the objectives of which are to identify the conditions under which individual tools and methods represent 'best practice'. During these exercises the need for additional methods and tools will also be identified and these methods and tools developed and tested. Particular attention will be placed, because of their potential benefits, on the use of fuzzy logic and neural networks for establishing cost estimating relationships. During the cost modelling exercises and new tool development tasks, rules for selecting "best practices" will be identified and used to develop an expert advisor. Model Management and Quality Assurance procedures, (storage, maintenance, retrieval), will be developed to ensure that cost models can be made available throughout a manufacturing organisation and that they remain up-to-date.
