Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of the proposal is to bring together three research groups in the Civil Engineering Department (5* RAE rating, 4m JIF award) and one in the Psychology Department (5 RAE rating, 8.3 JIF award) with a shared interest in risk, reliability and optimisation, with specific reference to networks. The fruitful exchange of ideas between the groups would be deepened though the exchange of software and knowledge once the computing facility is available. The individual groups bring strong research portfolios requiring powerful computing, but the interaction enabled by the shared facility will open up new areas of joint, multi-disciplinary research. At present, the groups are working independently with a range of PCs and Unix platforms. The proposed facility would not only increase the computing power available to the groups but would also enable code sharing, the pooling of technical expertise, the long-term training of research staff in line with the research careers concordat, and the reduction of the equipment maintenance burden to the individual groups. IBM will provide software development, porting and tuning advice, and links with appropriate parts of IBM Research. In return, IBM is looking for feedback on the use of transport network and fluid flow techniques. The JIF awards do not include funding for a major computational facility.
