Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is to improve our infrastructural base for field and laboratory research. Some overloaded, out-of-date and failing analytical equipment inhibits our field and laboratory research programmes. Some of our projects on anaerobic biodegradation of organics could produce important findings on the significance of polar end products and intermediates, but are prevented from doing so by the lack of appropriate analytical equipment; these are in addition to the outcomes anticipated when the projects were started. Hence this Multi-project research equipment bid is to provide:(1) replacement instruments (DIC - dual ion chromatograph, and HPLC - high pressure liquid chromatograph),(2) two new instruments (IIC - inert ion chromatograph for transition metal analysis, and GC-MS - gas chromatograph with mass spectrometry detection),(3) technician support to set up all the equipment and then to operate the new IIC and GC-MS.They will support an existing programme of projects which runs until early 2003 and enable the group and its collaborators to bid for further grants and contracts to meet the objectives of the four themes outlined above.
